The Super League's Short Season, Explained

The Super League was built to run like European soccer, from late summer to spring. It is about to stop doing that. On June 5 the league announced that from 2027 it will play spring to fall, the same calendar as the NWSL and most of American soccer. What you are watching now is the bridge: a 14-game 2026 Fall Season that ends in December.

It is short, it is different, and it counts. Here is how it works.

Eight clubs play 14 games each, seven at home and seven away, from Aug. 15 to Nov. 28. The club that finishes first wins the Players' Shield. The top four go to the playoffs: semifinals on the weekend of Dec. 5 and the Final on the weekend of Dec. 12. After that, the league goes quiet until a full season starts in 2027 on the new calendar. The league has not yet said when in 2027.

The short season changes the arithmetic. In a 14-game season each game is worth about seven percent of the table, and half the league makes the playoffs. A bad month in September can end a season. A good one can win it.

Why change at all? The USL's president and chief executive, Paul McDonough, put it in terms of fitting in: “Aligning our calendar with the broader domestic game positions us to be a stronger partner,” he said. In practice that means the same transfer windows and the same rhythm as the NWSL, which makes it easier to move players between the two, including on loan.

The change has already cost the league some time. Athletic Club Boise, which had planned a Super League team for 2027, said in July it will not field one in 2027, because the new calendar shortened its runway to launch.

The league also has a new name, which is easy to miss. It has played as the Gainbridge Super League since the 2025–26 season, after a naming-rights deal the USL described as the first for a professional soccer league in the United States. The clubs, the Division I status and the USL are the same.

The eight clubs are Brooklyn FC, Carolina Ascent, Dallas Trinity, DC Power, Fort Lauderdale United, Lexington SC, Sporting JAX and Tampa Bay Sun. There were nine last season. Spokane Zephyr FC said on May 20 that it would not continue beyond the 2025–26 season. It gave no reason.

The fall is a rematch. On May 30, Lexington SC beat Carolina Ascent 3–1 after extra time in the 2025–26 final, before a sellout crowd of 7,715 at Lexington SC Stadium. Mia Corbin put Carolina ahead in first-half stoppage time. McKenzie Weinert equalized in the 72nd minute, Regan Steigleder, the final's MVP, scored early in extra time, and Addie McCain finished it. Lexington, last in its first season, had also won the Shield. The league called it a worst-to-first season.

Six games into the fall, Carolina has answered. It has won five of six and leads with 15 points, five clear of Sporting JAX and Dallas Trinity. Lexington is sixth, but it has played only four, and it just won 1–0 at Sporting JAX.

Some of the rosters look different. Brooklyn signed Carlee Giammona, who won the league's first title with Tampa Bay Sun in 2024–25. Dallas Trinity is now managed by former MLS midfielder Lee Nguyen, the club's third first-team manager. And several NWSL clubs have loaned players into the league for the fall, the kind of traffic the new calendar is meant to make routine.
