How the 2026 NWSL Playoff Race Works

Every club in the NWSL has played 25 games. Five are left, then Decision Day on Sunday, Nov. 1, then three rounds of knockouts ending at Audi Field on Nov. 21. This is the whole race on one page: how the playoffs work, how ties are broken, and where each club stands.

The short version. Gotham is five points clear at the top. The top five have a cushion of at least three points over sixth. Below them, five clubs are separated by four points in the fight for the last three places, and one of them is an expansion team.

Eight of the 16 clubs qualify. They are seeded by where they finish, and every round is a single game: 1 plays 8, 2 plays 7, 3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5. The winners of 1 v 8 and 4 v 5 meet in one semifinal; the winners of 2 v 7 and 3 v 6 meet in the other. The bracket does not reseed.

The higher seed hosts the quarterfinal and the semifinal, under the league's competition rules, unless its stadium is not available. A tied game goes to two 15-minute periods of extra time, then penalties. The final is at a neutral site chosen in advance, and this year that is Audi Field, the Washington Spirit's home.

So finishing higher is worth something real. First place is worth two home games and a quarterfinal against the eighth seed. Fourth place is worth one home game, against the fifth seed.

Level on points is common in a 16-club league with this much parity, and it has already happened at the top. Utah and Portland both have 42 points and a goal difference of +8. Utah is fourth because it has 13 wins to Portland's 12, the second tiebreaker. Goals scored never comes into it.

The order matters more than it looks. Goal difference comes before head-to-head results, so a big win on Decision Day can be worth more than beating a rival in the spring.

The NWSL Shield goes to the club with the most points after 30 games. It also brings the No. 1 seed. Gotham, the reigning league champion and this year's Challenge Cup winner, leads with 51 points. Washington has 46 and San Diego 45.

Gotham has never won the Shield. It has won two championships as a playoff team, and it clinched a fourth straight playoff place by beating North Carolina 2–1 on Sept. 19. Washington can still reach 61 points and San Diego 60, so against the Spirit, Gotham's magic number is 11: any mix of Gotham points won and Washington points dropped that adds up to 11 puts Washington out of reach. Against San Diego it is 10. Four wins from its last five would settle it without help.

This is where the table is crowded. Angel City and North Carolina have 39 points, Kansas City 38, Seattle 37 and Denver 35. Angel City has the best goal difference in the league, +15, so it wins a tie on points against every club near it. Kansas City's is +3 and Seattle's is zero.

Below them, the maths is still open but the gaps are big. Orlando, 11th with 30 points, can reach 45. Houston can reach 44, and Bay and Boston 41. Louisville can reach 38, exactly Kansas City's total today. Chicago is already out.

Denver is the story in that group. In its first season, Nick Cushing's side is 9-8-8 after beating Seattle 2–1 at Centennial Stadium on Sept. 19, and three points below the line. It has already drawn the biggest crowd of the season: 63,004 at Empower Field at Mile High for a 0–0 draw with Washington on March 28.

North Carolina's Ashley Sanchez has 19 goals, one short of Temwa Chawinga's single-season record of 20, set in 2024. She already holds the single-season record for an American player. North Carolina has five games left, and it needs the points as much as she needs the goal.
